Dog bites are extremely common and rarely cause major problems unless the actual dog attack was particularly vicious. There are an estimated 3,000,000 to 4,000,000 dog bites in the United States a year and most are not reported to any government agency or seen by a doctor. There are 10-20 deaths from dog bites, usually small children who have been mauled. Infections are fairly common though, and prudent action at the time of the bite can save considerable misery and expense. The first step in dog bite care is to see a doctor and have the wound cleaned and debrided (loose tissue removed). If you are unable to see a doctor, the wound should be thoroughly cleaned.
